OVERVIEW OF POSITION
Reporting to the Supervisor, Facility and Parks Operations the Summer Student Parks positions are responsible for various duties related to the Town’s Parks departments.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Involved with all aspects of the daily grass cutting town wide.
- Inspection or repair of playgrounds and trails. Assist staff with special event setup. Litter, brush and garbage control and pick-up.
- Daily waste collection in parks Town-wide. Opening/closing and cleaning of park washrooms.
- Sports field maintenance including daily maintenance, inspections and repairs.
- Cemetery maintenance including daily grounds maintenance, marker installations and assisting with interments.
- Organize resources, supplies, labour, tools, and inform the Lead Hand of anything required to carry out assigned tasks.
- Operate all vehicles, equipment, and tools in a safe and efficient manner and provide appropriate instruction to staff when necessary.
- Familiarization with all official dimensions of playing surfaces; baseball diamonds, soccer pitches, etc. as well as lining procedures and proper grooming procedures and requirements for safe playable surfaces.
- Ensure and assist staff in the safe and effective operation of grooming equipment.
- Ensure all surfaces are safe for daily use and inform Lead Hand of unsafe conditions.
- Daily cleaning of all areas; player’s benches, backstops, under bleachers.
- Apply pesticides as directed.
- Keep accurate records of daily tasks and report back to Lead hand.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- All applicants must provide confirmation of post-secondary full time student status in September 2025 and/or acceptance into full time studies in September 2025.
- A valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver’s Licence Class G2 required (Ontario Driver’s Licence Class G preferred) with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration. Successful applicants will be required to provide the Corporation with a copy of their driver’s licence and all new hires will be required to pass a Town administered road test as a condition of employment.
- Ability to deal with the public courteously and effectively.
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Any experience in parks operations and/or maintaining an asset.
- Ability and willingness to work in varying weather conditions.
- Willingness and ability to work shifts, weekends, in addition to having the flexibility to work to weekly schedules and to take on additional workload as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT
- The incumbent in this position will work a maximum of 40 hours per week in variable 8 hour shifts between 7:00am-6:00pm, Monday through Friday within the contract period; however, some flexibility may be required.
- The compensation for this position is $18.66/hour.
- The Town offers an excellent comprehensive benefit package, and participation in the Ontario Municipal Employee Retirement Scheme (OMERS) pension plan.
Note: Work is performed in varying weather conditions, successful applicants will be required to provide their own green patch work boots and rain gear.
