Recreational skating programs are available at the Erin Community Centre (Centre 2000) this August, with a full recreational skating schedule in Erin and Hillsburgh starting in September.

Recreational Skating Programs

Adult Skate – A leisure skate for participants aged 18 and older. No pucks or sticks allowed during this time. CSA approved helmets are highly recommended.

Adult Stick & Puck – This self-taught Stick & Puck program allows for a relaxed atmosphere to help develop hockey skills at your own pace, in a comfortable setting. Work on stick handling, shooting and skating skills. NO scrimmages/games, NO slap shots or body contact allowed. Helmets are strongly recommended.

Public Skating – Lace up and join us on the ice! Public Skating is a fun, welcoming drop-in program open to all ages and skill levels. Enjoy a relaxed environment to skate with friends, family, or on your own. Please note that shinny hockey, figure skating, and speed skating are not permitted during public sessions. Helmets are strongly recommended.

Family Stick & Puck – Families with young children or homeschool families wanting to work on hockey/ringette skills. All children must be supervised on ice by a parent or guardian. A parent or guardian must be in the facility during the duration of the program. Any child from the family not on the ice must also be supervised by a parent or guardian.

Figure Skating Ice – For experienced figure skaters to individually practice their spins, jumps and the fundamentals of figure skating. Private training is not allowed during this time.

Parent and Tot Skate – Designed for families with young children or homeschooling families, this session offers a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. An adult must provide constant, active supervision on the ice. Free use of skate aids is available at the arena or, all participants are welcome to bring their own.

Youth Stick and Puck – Youth Stick and Puck sessions are open ice times where players (aged 13-17) can work on individual hockey skills at their own pace. These sessions are not games or scrimmage - no full-contact play, organized team drills, or coaching from the ice is allowed. Players must bring their own stick and puck. Helmets, gloves, and skates are mandatory.

Shinny and Stick and Puck Rules

  • CSA-approved helmet required for all skaters
  • Full cage for skaters under 18
  • Full equipment is highly recommended

Recreational Skating Safety

  • Accidents or injuries must be reported to Town staff immediately.
  • Only individuals wearing skates are permitted on the ice.
  • Food and drinks are not allowed on the ice.
  • CSA approved helmets are strongly recommended for all skaters, and mandatory for Shinny, and Stick and Puck.
  • Parents or guardians must remain on or near the ice and provide full supervision for children under 10.
  • Coaching is not permitted.
  • All skaters must skate in the same direction during recreational skating.
  • Wheelchairs, wheelchair skates and sledges are permitted.
  • Town-approved skating aids are available for those who require assistance and must remain within designated skate areas while on the ice.
  • Wheelchairs are allowed on the ice if a responsible person age 16 or older with skates on accompanies the participant.

Not allowed during Recreational Skating:

  • General horseplay, fighting, or deliberate interference with other skaters.
  • Figure skating; skating backwards, erratic skating, or excessive speeds.
  • Tag or games.
  • Pucks, hockey sticks, chairs, strollers, or any equipment (except for town-approved skate aids).

Ice maintenance

Ice maintenance will occur before the scheduled end time of recreational skating and shinny programs. Skaters will be asked to leave the ice when directed. Players and skaters must wait until the ice resurfacer has finished and the doors are fully closed before re-entering the ice.

Coaching or teaching

Coaching or structured instruction is not allowed during drop-in or reserved recreational programs. Casual pointers are permitted as long as they are informal and incidental to recreational activities. Town staff may use discretion to determine if an activity is considered coaching.
