Statement on the passing of Hazel McCallion former Mayor of Mississauga

On behalf of the Town of Erin Council, I would like to convey our deepest condolences on the passing Hazel McCallion the former Mayor of Mississauga.

She leaves behind a legacy that few can hope to surpass. Her passion for her city and her indomitable spirit saw Mississauga grow from a small community to the sixth-largest city in Canada. The success of Mississauga is testament to her tenacity and dedication. She has helped shape the Mississauga of today.

As a municipal leader, she inspired many of us to fight for our community whether it’s at the provincial or federal level. She got things done. She was wise, vocal and worked extremely hard right up until the very end. Not only did she inspire many fellow municipal leaders, but also numerous women to push boundaries and seek out positions of influence.

Her passion and determination for the betterment of her community and the city of Mississauga was absolute and will always remain legendary for generations to come. Her moniker “Hurricane Hazel” is well earned. Her passing leaves a huge gap in the realms of municipal politics.

My condolences to her family, loved ones and the countless individuals she has had a lasting impact upon during her years of service.

Flags will be lowered to half-mast as a mark of respect for the former Mayor Hazel McCallion and the former Lt Governor of Ontario David Onley at Town facilities.
