Hillsburgh arena set to open early to offer September rink time

Centre 2000 is getting an exciting set of upgrades this summer.

The Town of Erin received a $1.9 million grant from the Canada Infrastructure Program to support a much-needed overhaul of the facility.

Centre 2000 will be receiving upgrades to the fire system and HVAC system, in addition to a new generator which will allow Centre 2000 to become an Emergency Centre in times of need.

The main lobby and snack bar will be refreshed with new flooring, paint and a new stainless-steel countertop in the commercial kitchen. Floors will also be replaced upstairs in the Shamrock Room, along with an overhaul of the washrooms and a refresh of the kitchen.

“These changes are going to greatly improve not only the look and feel of our recreation centre, but also ensure safety and comfort for years to come,” said Dee-Enna Dube, Erin’s Manager of Parks and Recreation.

The Erin Community Centre will be closed to the public while work is ongoing over the course of the summer, with the ice rink slated to open in October.

As a result of the renovations, Town of Erin staff have found alternative accommodation for user groups who will be impacted during the renovations at Centre 2000, which will limit access to the facility over the summer.

Staff have arranged to open the rink at the Hillsburgh Community Centre in September to accommodate affected user groups.

“We are so excited about the upgrades underway at the site and are working to minimize the impact on residents and user groups over the summer,” said Dube.

The grounds of Centre 2000 will remain open to the public, including the baseball diamond and soccer fields. The generator is expected to be installed in 2025.
