The Town of Erin has adopted a new donation policy that outlines protocols and expectations for both cash and in-kind gifts given to the municipality.
On May 8, Erin Town Council adopted the policy which defines specific definitions for donations, eligibility for donations that can be accepted, valuation and more.
“Now that we have a donation policy in place we will be issuing official tax receipts for eligible donations,” said Treasurer Wendy Parr, explaining that municipal donations were made tax deductible by the federal government in 2011.
“This policy establishes clear guidelines for what donations the Town can accept, while ensuring transparency and accountability,” said Parr. “It’s a valuable guide for staff, ensuring standardization and consistency.”
In-kind gifts will be subject to a review process and will be considered by the donation committee, taking into consideration several factors, including usefulness, alignment with Town priorities, maintenance costs and other risks.
A Public Arts Committee will consider any art pieces or gifts of cultural significance and the Town’s legal counsel will review proposals to donate land. The policy also outlines the eligibility and process for valuation of in-kind gifts for providing tax receipts.
