Ashlee Swackhammer presented Fire Safety Action Award

Date: Jun 20, 2014

It is my pleasure to announce and recognize some great work by our Erin fire service.

On June 19, 2014 Ashlee Swackhamer received a fire safety action award in a ceremony held in Toronto.  The annual fire safety awards ceremony is hosted by the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council which recognizes outstanding contributions to fire protection and prevention in Ontario.

In January, 11 year old Ashlee Swackhammer was at home in Orton, Ontario when she spotted smoke and flames coming from the workshop on their property.  Ashlee immediately told her grandmother to call 9-1-1.  Although there were four dogs in the shop, Ashlee had learned from attending a Erin Fire Service public education session at school that in a fire, you must never enter a building.  Ashlee and grandmother then waited outside for the Erin Fire & Emergency Services who were able to  save three of the four dogs and prevent the fire from spreading to the house.

Thank you to Public Education Officers Ryan Ladner and Lee-Ann Lawrence for your outstanding contributions to our fire service and thank you to our firefighters for your ongoing professionalism and dedication to our fire service and the citizens of the Town of Erin.

Have a great summer everyone and stay safe.
