The Town of Erin owns, operates and maintains two residential drinking water systems, the Erin Municipal Water System, and the Hillsburgh Municipal Water System.

The operations of the Town of Erin’s water systems are regulated under the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Ontario Water Resources Act. Regulation 170/03 under the Safe Drinking Water Act dictates the monitoring and water quality checking that must be completed to ensure that the water supplied to the consumer is safe for consumption.

We are proud of the high quality of our drinking water, and continuously maintain an efficient system to ensure that all residents can rely on a water supply that is both plentiful and safe.

Outdoor Watering Tips

  • Water your lawn and garden in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler to minimize evaporation
  • If water runs off your lawn easily, split your watering time into shorter periods to allow for better absorption.
  • Spreading a layer of organic mulch around plants retains moisture and saves water, time and money
  • Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street.
  • Use sprinklers for large areas of grass. Water small patches by hand to avoid waste.
  • Collect water from your roof to water your garden.
  • Rather than following a set watering schedule, check for soil moisture two to three inches below the surface before watering.
  • Remember to check your sprinkler system valves periodically for leaks and keep the sprinkler heads in good shape
  • When the kids want to cool off, use the sprinkler in an area where your lawn needs it the most
  • Use sprinklers that deliver big drops of water close to the ground. Smaller water drops and mist often evaporate before they hit the ground.
  • Wash your pets outdoors in an area of your lawn that needs water.
  • Aerate your lawn at least once a year so water can reach the roots rather than run off the surface.
  • Use rain barrels to water your lawn or gardens
  • Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways and sidewalks
