Hydro One is proposing to widen the existing 500kV transmission corridor by 175 feet to 200 feet. The current 500kV line carries 20% of Ontario’s hydro demand. The proposed expansion will increase the current 5000MW to 9000MV. The Bruce Nuclear plant has 8 units of which only 6 units are operational. They are proposing to bring on line the 2 unused units. The expansion will take into consideration the extra power generation from the 2 units as well as the wind power generation from the Shelburne area. This impacts the Town of Erin as the current hydro corridor runs from the Bruce Peninsula down through the town of Erin in the area of the third, fourth or fifth concessions from the Erin/East Garafraxa Townline to the Erin/Halton Hills Townline on down to Milton.

More information regarding this proposed corridor is available from Hydro One or at the Town Municipal Office.

A Bit of History:

Hillsburgh's electricity originally came from the Cataract Light and Power Company after Erin had first received it in 1905 (5 miles away) and Alton in 1906 (4 miles away).  The company was purchased by Ontario Hydro in 1944.

A Bit of History:

In 1911, the Consolidated Telephone Company was established.  In 1921 the Erin Municipal Telephone Company was formed and out of it Erin lines were purchased by shareholders (farmers and townsmen).  The Caledon Municipal Telephone Company emerged at the same time.

Community Telephone out of Dunnville purchased the local company serving Hillsburgh and Erin and was later sold to the U.S. company Continental Telephone in 1973.  Bell Canada purchased the company on April 18, 1980.
